How much is this going to cost?
Thinking Like a Business Owner
I love this question…
I do. I love this question because it immediately tells me you’re already thinking like a business owner. Thank you.
Honestly, it takes time, energy, commitment, and yes… there are financial startup costs associated with becoming state licensed, along with other business expenses as your career grows.
Obviously, every successful business begins with an investment. Since every advisor’s journey begins a little differently, each person’s expenses naturally reflect the pathway they choose.
Most new advisors are pleasantly surprised to discover their complete state pre-licensing education and licensing investment is typically less than $500.
Every state is a little different, and together we’ll help you understand exactly what to expect before you make any decisions.
If you already have an active state Life Insurance license, your startup costs may be minimal or even close to zero.
Understanding Your Licensing Journey
If you’re brand new to the industry, you’ll typically begin with your Free SAF Pre-Licensing Course Study Supplements, located inside your SAF Advisor Portal.
From there, you’ll progress through your resident state’s required pre-exam licensing education. Through SAF, you’ll also receive a discount code that saves you $80. You’re welcome. 
Each state has its own licensing requirements, which generally include:
- Resident state licensing education
- State licensing examination
- Fingerprinting
- License application fees
If you’re building an agency, additional agency licensing requirements may also apply.

The great news is that these startup expenses are surprisingly low and incredibly reasonable compared with most business startup costs. They’re also paid directly to the education providers and state licensing agencies.
The part I really enjoy most is helping you understand exactly what to expect before you ever make a decision.

Do I need an insurance license?
Absolutely Yes.
If your goal is to help individuals, couples, and families create greater Stability through insurance and retirement solutions, then yes… you’ll need an Active Life insurance license.
The wonderful news is that becoming licensed is a relatively short and very achievable process. Plus, we’ll be right here to help you understand each step along the way.
One of the next questions I usually hear is…
“Which license should I get?” (Life Only or Life, Accident & Health)
If you are starting from scratch, with our experience, my strongest recommendation is almost always the General Lines: Life, Accident, Health & HMO License.
While many states also offer a Life Only License, I usually encourage people to think about where they hope to be three, five, or even ten years from now.
The investment in both time and cost is very similar, yet the General Lines license opens the door to serving families in many more meaningful ways throughout every season of life (i.e. Long-Term Care, Medicare Supplements, etc.).
With a General Lines license, you’ll have the opportunity to help families with:

• Life Insurance
• Final Expense Benefits
• Mortgage Protection
• Fixed & Fixed Indexed Annuities
as well as…
• Long-Term Care Solutions
• Medicare Supplements
• Medicare Advantage

Already have a Life Only License?
That’s fantastic! I genuinely love hearing that because it means you can get started immediately.

How long does licensing take?
Love this question too, because it usually tells me I’m talking with someone who enjoys taking initiative, getting things done, and creating momentum. Most people asking this simply want to know the “normal” timeframe so they can begin moving forward.
It’s actually one of the reasons we created the SAF Advisor Academy.
Every new advisor receives our Free SAF Pre-Licensing Study Supplements inside the Advisor Portal because we’ve discovered that having another layer of support helps people learn more confidently and move through the licensing process even more smoothly.
As a result, one of the things that pleasantly surprises me is just how quickly people now get this done.

Most advisors like myself, complete their licensing process within just a few weeks, although the exact timeline varies by state and obviously the pace that fits your schedule.
